Warm Drinks & Cigars

The winter months have arrived, and they have come with a vengeance. What’s a better way to stay warm than with your favorite warm beverage and a fine cigar. The art of the warm alcoholic delight is centuries old, and they have proven time and time again to keep you nice and toasty. Now add in a top notch cigar and you’re all set for the snow. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite warm drink and cigar pairings.

Earl Grey Hot Toddy and Oliva Nub 460 Cameroon

The hot toddy has been a favorite of the British Islands for over 200 hundred years. At its basic form, it is hot water, honey, and whiskey. However, the British do love their tea, so by adding a bag of Earl Grey tea in there, you get a warm, flavorful beverage. The whiskey, being either scotch or bourbon, adds in a touch of spice and wood while the honey will give it that touch of sweetness. Lighting up an Oliva Nub 460 Cameroon seemed very appropriate for this pairing. Its Cameroon wrapper has notes of leather and spice, as well as a dash of cinnamon and honey as well. This is perfect for sitting by the fire while wearing a heavy Irish sweater.

Mexican Hot Chocolate and Romeo San Andres

Here we have our only non-alcoholic drink on the list, but have no fear, this is a fan favorite to keep you warm during the holidays. Mexican hot chocolate differs from your usual drink in it is thicker, and can use a corn base for a slightly grainy consistency. However, the addition of the corn and dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg, make this a complex and flavorful drink with a nice aroma to it. Using a cigar with a dark, Mexican wrapper was obvious enough, but which one to choose was quite difficult. However, the minute I lit up the Romeo San Andres, with its dark chocolate notes and its dashes of spice and sweetness, I knew this would be the perfect pairing for fans of Mexican delights.

Spiked Irish Coffee and Alec Bradley Classic Series Nicaragua

Fans of Jameson are going to love this pairing. The Irish Coffee is an age old cocktail that has become very popular the past few years. It is a combination of hot coffee, Irish whisky, and sugar. It combines the bold, wood, and spicy notes of the whisky with the sweetness of the sugar and the rich notes of the coffee. We went with the Alec Bradley Classic Series Nicaragua for this pairing, and for good reason. The Nicaraguan filler and wrapper add in wonderful notes of pepper and spice to the mix. The Sumatra binder that gives it just a touch of sweetness and a bold coffee aroma.

Tom & Jerry and Davidoff The Late Hour

The Tom & Jerry is a favorite Christmastime cocktail in the US. It has its origins all the back to the 1820s. It is essentially a combination of warm eggnog, rum, and warm milk, but there are several variants and ingredients that can be added as well. It is then topped with whipped cream and a dash of nutmeg, for a rich, creamy and sweet treat. The addition of dark rum can make this a quite powerful drink, so make sure to not operate heavy machinery. To go with the powerful and flavorful beverage, we needed a cigar equally powerful and flavorful. The Davidoff Late Hour is dark and bold with touches of dark chocolate, cream, coffee, and a sweet spice towards the end. It is the sweet spice that really sealed the deal and made this my go-to Christmas Eve drink

Hot Scotch Apple Cider and La Cima

Who doesn’t love a good spiked cider? It is a fan favorite this time of year, especially if you are using a nice Scotch to make it warm you right up. The addition of cinnamon and nutmeg give it a nice, zesty undertone that combines perfectly with the crisp and sweet notes from the cider and the wood and fruity tones from the Scotch. For this more mellow and sweet drink, we went with the brand new La Cima from My Father. Its Nicaraguan tobaccos give it a dash of sweet spice and fruity notes, while its Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper make it smooth, creamy, and mellow. This is a great cocktail hour pairing for early in the night.
