Crowned Heads Mil Dias Cigar Review

Brief History of the Crowned Heads Mil Dias

You may not think during a worldwide pandemic, someone would have the drive and determination to create something fresh and new. While the world was on pause, Jon Huber of Crowned Heads kept trucking along, releasing three cigars throughout 2020.

Following the Las Calaveras 2020 and Four Kicks Capa Especial, Huber released his most prized creation to date, the Mil Dias. Translating to “1,000 Days” due to how long it took from fruition to completion, the blueprint of Crowned Heads Mil Dias was first created and smoked back in 2017.

Manufactured at Tabacalera Pichardo, Jon Huber brought on longtime friend and collaborator Don Eradio Pichardo, as well as Luciano Meirelles, who initially gave Jon Huber blend samples that later ended up being the Mil Dias. Both Pichard and Meirelles ended up being a very intricate part throughout the blending process of the Mil Dias.

Since its release, Jon Huber has gone on the record saying that the Mil Dias is extremely near and dear to his heart for the simple fact that the journey the trio had to take to get to the result is something that can never be unmatched.

“Collaborating with others in any industry can be tough. When you nail it on the head the first go around and see the success of your product that you created, well there’s no better feeling than that.” – Jon Huber

Cigar Specs

Cold Draw

The size I smoked for this Mil Dias cigar review was one of my favorite sizes for any cigar, the 6 x 54 Sublime. The cold draw may be slightly different if you’re smoking a different size, but for the most part, each cold draw flavor is rather consistent.

Once I trimmed a tad bit off the cap, I took a few pulls to see what flavors I detected in the cold draw.

At first, I was tasting a lot of honey and wheat. I then took a sip of my iced coffee, took a two-minute break, and did another cold draw test.

The second time around I still detected a touch of honey, but the taste of black pepper really came to the forefront this time around.

First Third

As I entered the first third of the Mil Dias, I was anticipating a lot upfront. Most cigars from Crowned Heads hit you a ton of flavor at the beginning that eventually evens out as you continue to smoke it. That’s exactly what the cigar did for me.

A few minutes into the first third of the Mil Dias that black pepper and honey from the cold draw remained present, alongside a touch of wood. The black pepper wasn’t as predominant once lit but balanced out very well alongside the other delicious flavors.

Second Third

When I approached the second third of the smoke, honey, black pepper, and wood remained as prominent as ever. The flavor notes really started to work well with one another which in turn really satisfied my palate.

One flavor I wasn’t expecting to detect in the second third of the stick was a touch of dark chocolate. I don’t know if it’s just my sweet tooth kicking in, but the added touch of dark chocolate I was able to taste really made the Mil Dias the ultimate treat as I was halfway through smoking it.

Final Third

The final third of the cigar continued the ongoing stability of all the flavors I’ve detected in the first two-thirds. The black pepper and honey dissipated a bit as the wood and dark chocolate notes took control.

On the backend, my palate discovered a subtle creaminess that was such a perfect nuance to round out my Mil Dias smoking experience.

Overall Strength

Before smoking the cigar, I read that it was medium to full-bodied in strength. However, I’ve smoked the Mil Dias on about four different occasions, and each time it leaned more towards being a full-bodied smoke.

I’ve had the good fortune of enjoying a lot of different cigars from Crowned Heads and most of them lean towards the fuller-bodied side of strength, which I’m growing to enjoy and love.

So don’t let the lighter shade color of the wrapper fool you, this cigar packs a lot of punch with each puff.

Pairings

This was my fifth go around enjoying the Mil Dias and I try to pair it with a different beverage each time. The first few times I smoked it; I always had a coffee alongside it. Whether it was a hot cup of joe or a cold brew. I do think coffee is the best option to pair along with any size of the Mil Dias range.

But this time I went in a different direction. I tried a Bourbon Mule for the very first time the other night, and I figured I’d light up the Mil Dias to go alongside this refreshing beverage.

This paring experience was something I’ll be going back to very shortly. The refreshing ginger and bourbon really brought out the succulent flavor notes that flowed throughout this smoke. Neither the alcohol nor tobacco was overpowering one another.

I recommend this pairing to anyone who hasn’t tried it out yet as soon as possible.

In Conclusion

If you are unfamiliar with Crowned Heads cigars, then there are a plethora of cigars under their catalog to choose from. Personally, I’d give this one a try first and foremost.

The love and care that Huber, Pichardo, and Meirelles put into making this, mixed with the delectable flavor notes throughout this gem will reel in any novice cigar smoker out there.

The six different sizes of the Crowned Heads are available in a box of 10, a box of 20, or a box of 30, and is now available on our website today!
