Oscar Valladares Super Fly Cigar Review

Oscar Valladares Super Fly is a strong-bodied, full-strength stick from Oscar Valladares Cigars that holds its own among the best premium cigars.

This multinational smoke has a filler from Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, Honduran binder, and San Andres Mexican wrapper, all of which combines to create a 70s-inspired retro boutique cigar unlike anything else on the market.

A little on Oscar Valladares Cigars

Oscar Valladares Tobacco & Co opened in 2012 in Honduras following a long friendship between Oscar Valladares and Bayron Duarte.

Oscar's brother Hector came in on the venture from the beginning too, and the company soon became known for its Mayan-inspired practice of presenting its cigars wrapped in a tobacco leaf.

What other cigars are Oscar Valladares known for?

Valladares cigars is famous for the 2012 range, named for the year the factory opened. Duarte also gets his name on the label, on the limited edition My Way by Bayron Duarte, one to experience before it sells out forever.

Oscar Valladares Heaven and Hell

Oscar Valladares Heaven and Hell was made exclusively for Cigars.com to show the difference the wrapper can make to a smoke.

The two-vitola line of 6x52 cigars has aged Honduran tobacco in a Mexican binder, but in a choice of Connecticut or Nicaraguan Maduro wrapper. Next time you're ordering cigars online, add both to your basket and experience the light and darkness of Heaven and Hell.

What is the Oscar Valladares Super Fly?

Super Fly is fun on the outside, with its retro 70s-inspired label and chic purple color scheme, but inside it's all business, with Valladares Cigars' strongest blend to date.

While it's still not the strongest cigar on the market, it packs as big of a punch as any of the smokes we've covered in previous Oscar Valladares cigar reviews. It's also a great way to experience the full flavor of what this brand can offer.

What can I expect from the cold draw?

Super Fly offers a sweet cold draw with elements of chocolate, cream and vanilla. There's also hints of barnyard hay. It's well worth taking a few minutes to really savor the cold draw on this strong blend, before you spark it up and dive into the smoking experience itself.

What flavors should I expect?

Once Super Fly is lit, what can you expect to experience on the palate? Let's take a trip through the thirds of smoking this strong cigar.

First Third

There's no waiting for Oscar Valladares Super Fly to deliver on strength, as the first third very quickly becomes medium-full in that department. The chocolate is not so immediate, but the cream is there from the start, along with citrus notes and plenty of pungent smoke.

Second Third

As the smoke continues, the complexity cuts back slightly, leaving a simpler but still enjoyable mix of nutty cashew tastes, lemon citrus flavors, and peppery notes. You might want to have a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of cool lemonade on hand for this phase as the perfect mid-smoke snack.

Final Third

The citrus fades but still lingers, but the smoke is not sour — instead, sweetness persists throughout the final third. The strength is also trimmed back toward the end of the stick, reaching the lower end of medium-full as you approach the last few puffs and easing you back into reality.

What is the strength profile like?

If you like a cigar with a consistent strength profile, Super Fly is the one for you. Good strength from the outset remains through the first and second thirds, and only trails off slightly toward the end, to wrap up a thoroughly enjoyable smoke.

How is the cigar constructed?

Super Fly is carefully constructed and robust, with steady white ash and little to no touch-up needed to keep the smoke nice and even. The blend of Dominican Republic, Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos is held by a Honduran binder and the distinctive dark San Andres Mexican wrapper to deliver a slow and satisfying burn.

Final thoughts

Oscar Valladares Super Fly is something different from most of the best premium cigars on the present-day market, but only in a very good way. This one is perfectly suited to fans of full-strength cigars, or anyone looking for a truly artisanal cigar smoking experience.
