Smoking Cigars: The Doors

Today, we are looking at a band that quite literally opened the doors to the psychedelic era of music during the late 1960s. Led by the enigmatic and fascinating Jim Morrison, renowned for his unhinged behavior, The Doors formed a dark, exotic sound that soundtracked the West Coast, eventually becoming a pop phenomenon.

Despite being together for less than a decade, they remain one of the most groundbreaking and successful rock groups, being the first American band to accumulate eight consecutive gold LPs.

While The Doors certainly knew how to “light my fire” along with the millions of fans they continue to amass (even after their demise), the band, and especially Morrison, were heavy smokers. Among other things, cigars were all part of Morrison’s rock star excess.

Such was Morrison’s idol status — one obsessed fan (known as “cigar pain”) would hang around the rehearsal studio and sing through the air conditioning vent. The rumor is he got his nickname after deliberately burning his vocal cords with a cigar to sound more like The Doors’ frontman.

Given The Doors were dubbed “The Kings of Acid Rock,” it’s only fitting we suggest three infused cigars to smoke while you get your psychedelic fix.

Infused cigars to smoke while listening to The Doors

Psychedelic Turtle

  • Country of Origin: Nicaragua
  • Strength: Medium - Full
  • Wrapper: Brazilian Ballaño
  • Binder: Habano
  • Filler: Nicaragua (Condega and Jalapa)
  • Sizes Available: 5 x 56 (Robusto Grande)

An extremely limited collaboration between Espinosa Cigars and Cigar Dojo, the Psychedelic Turtle is a 5 x 56 box-pressed robusto grande made at the picturesque La Zona factory. It has a turtle shell-inspired shape and is as vibrant in flavor as in appearance.

Cloaked in a Brazilian Ballaño wrapper over a Habano binder, it features high-priming Nicaraguan fillers from Condega and Jalapa to give the smoke a sweet and spicy core.

This cigar is perfect for “Strange Days” and mysterious nights. Turn on the black light, crank up The Doors, and lose yourself in slow-burning notes of cedar, nutmeg, and tangy Sumatra-roast coffee.

With a limited offering of only 400 bundles of 10 cigars ever made, it’s a cigar that’s incredibly hard to get hold of. Unfortunately, cigars.com no longer sells the Psychedelic Turtle, but we stock the Espinosa Laranja Reserva, which shares a similar flavor profile. Exhibiting an orange theme that includes a Brazilian wrapper with an orange-colored hue, it serves up a citrusy, peppery blend with hints of cedar and nuts to leave your taste buds feeling turtle-y amazed.

Acid Blue Blondie

  • Country of Origin: Nicaragua
  • Strength: Mellow - Medium
  • Wrapper: Connecticut Shade
  • Binder: Nicaragua
  • Filler: Nicaragua
  • Sizes Available: Acid Blue Blondie (4 x 38)

The Acid Blue Blondie is a small powerhouse cigar that flaunts a sweet Connecticut Shade wrapper with a pigtail cap that helps it stand out from the crowd. It has a metallic blue and gold band that adds to the overall aesthetic of this short smoke, which packs so much taste in its short 15-20 minutes burn time.

Produced by the mighty Drew Estate (masters of infused cigars), each Blue Blondie is carefully infused with over 140 natural botanicals, herbs, and essential oils to conjure up its unique flavor profile and intoxicating aroma.

Made with a large percentage of Ligero leaf and a sugar syrup–infused gum binding, it’s known for its abundant sweetness that delicately marries the wonderful aromatic notes of the tobaccos.

The ideal coffee break cigar when you’re sitting there wondering if “People Are Strange,” enjoy sweet and aromatic trances of honey, maple syrup, warm spice, and cinnamon with a deep coffee overtone.

Foundation The Upsetters Rock Steady

A cigar that matches The Doors’ radical sound and rebellious attitude, Foundation The Upsetters are flavor-infused smokes from Foundation Cigars. Each blend and size is named after the Jamaican underdogs of the ‘60s.

Their unique filler of Jamaican cow tongue tobacco alongside the finest Nicaraguan leaf creates a one-of-a-kind recipe. In the case of the intriguing 7 x 48 Rock Steady, it rides sweet-smelling notes of luscious cream, earth, sweet tea, and toast.

Each cigar line in the Upsetters portfolio has a distinctive wrapper and benefits further from a carefully measured technique known as “Caribbean atmospheric herbal fusion.”

How long were the Doors together?

Morrison’s mysterious death in Paris in 1971 saw him join the mythological "27 Club." The band tried to carry on without their cosmically mercurial singer but could only muster another two years before shutting the doors on their existence for good. Even though the band was only in existence for eight years, their work transformed popular music and culture.

In many ways, they were musical loners, refusing to blend in with the time’s folk-rock craze or surf-music scenes. This only adds to their legacy and enduring popularity.

At cigars.com, the doors are always open, so you can find an infused blend to suit your palate the next time you play one of their six studio albums that feature Morrison. Whether you are looking outside Waiting For The Sun (1968) or checking into Morrison Hotel (1970), be sure to check out our fantastic range of flavor-infused cigars.
