After officially being on hiatus from the premium cigar industry for over a decade, Tim Ozgener is splashing back onto the scene with Ozgener Family Cigars. Founded in early 2022, blends from Ozgener Family Cigars have already earned top-rated reviews from a number of publications, even winning Halfwheel’s New Company of the Year award. Although Tim Ozgener has a long history with cigars, his fledgling company is already starting to make waves and catch attention.

In case you are unfamiliar, Tim Ozgener has been involved with cigars for over 30 years. His father, Cano Ozgener, created the famous C.A.O. International in 1968 to sell Turkish meerschaum pipes. Seeing the growing popularity of handmade cigars in the early 1990s, the Ozgener family pivoted and founded C.A.O. Cigars in 1995 and the brand became an instant success and incredibly popular.

Tim Ozgener would continue to develop the C.A.O. Cigars portfolio along with his father and sister for years to come, until 2010 when C.A.O. was caught up in a merger that resulted in the Scandinavian Tobacco Group as it is known today. Ozgener, along with sales team, then left C.A.O. and S.T.G. in search of greener pastures. If this story sounds familiar, it is also the story of Crowned Heads Cigars started.

Following the end of his time with C.A.O., Ozgener would step away from the industry to focus on his family’s art center and community outreach. Although it was not known at the time, Ozgener however kept a foot in the door as a silent partner with Crowned Heads. It was not until the pandemic when Ozgener reflected on his family’s legacy and place among cigars and decided to get back in the game.

That reflection shines through in Ozgener Family Cigars’ inaugural release, Bosphorus. Bosphorus is a nod to Ozgener’s Turkish heritage and named after the Bosphorus Strait that passes through Istanbul, Turkey’s capital. This four-vitola line is handmade at Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic with a Nicaraguan core, dual Ecuadorian and Nicaraguan binders, and a top-quality Ecuadorian Habano 2000 wrapper and provides medium-full bodied notes of pepper, cedar, earth, and sweet floral tones.

Ozgener Family Cigars’ limited release Pi Synesthesia also reflects on Tim Ozgener’s heritage, but Pi Synesthesia brings focus to his father Cano’s artwork. Cano Ozgener was a mathematician prior to founding C.A.O. and had a particular fascination with the number pi and its infinite digits, and his artwork is depicted on Pi Synesthesia’s bands. Its Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, Ecuadorian Habano binder, and Nicaraguan fillers deliver a medium-bodied medley of spice, nuts, and cream.
