When Kristoff Cigars launched in 2004, one of its first blends was the Kristoff Original Maduro and it is still one of my favorite afternoon to evening treats to this day. The Original Maduro, along with the Original Criollo, propelled Kristoff Cigars into the zeitgeist and established it as a boutique brand worth paying attention to.
Kristoff Cigars was founded in 2004 when owner Glen Case decided to leave a successful career in finance to pursue his dream of working with premium cigars. He initially worked as a cigar broker, selling other brands in the United States, however the turbulent nature of brokering inspired him to create his own cigars.
He then met the famous cigar maker Rolando Villamil, who ran the Charles Fairmorn cigar factory in the Dominican Republic, and the two immediately hit it off. Named after Case’s son Christopher, the Kristoff brand was born soon after with the Original Criollo and Original Maduro leading the charge.
A tried-and-true classic, the Kristoff Original Maduro is made in the Dominican Republic with the entubado method of rolling where the expertly aged Dominican and Nicaraguan long fillers are rolled into tubes rather than folded or bunched. Surrounding the core is a thick Dominican binder and a top-quality Brazilian Maduro wrapper.
Once a cigar is lit and the rich medium-bodied smoke hits my palate, I am greeted by a flavorful and complex bouquet of dark chocolate, earth, black pepper, cedar, baking spices, roasted nuts, and tobacco sweetness. Complete with a pigtail cap and covered foot in the classic Cuban style, one puff and you will see why the Original Maduro is still a popular choice almost 20 years later.
