Black Star Line was created by Aric Bey, a banker turned pharmaceutical sales rep turned Chicago firefighter, who became obsessed with the art of cigarmaking and the camaraderie that came with discussing the days events over a handrolled cigar. Soon came stops at El Titan de Bronze cigar factory in Miami for the brand’s flagship line and eventually the brand was being produced at prestigious factories such as Aganorsa Leaf, Tabacalera La Isla and Fabrica Oveja Negra in Nicaragua. According to the PCA website, Black Star Line was named for “Black entrepreneur and activist Marcus Garvey, who founded the Black Star Line shipping company in 1919 to transport goods and eventually African Americans to Africa.” War Witch, the brand’s most popular flagship smoke, was inspired by “film depicting child soldiers forced to into a civil war in sub-Saharan Africa.” Within this brand and its most popular cigars are a century of culture and a representation in the cigar industry that adds a seat at the table for creative minds and tobacco savants like Bey.
