Foundation Highclere Castle Cigars
Foundation Cigars and founder Nick Melillo are dedicated to top-quality craftsmanship and blending, and Foundation Highclere Castle Cigars do it best. These gems are named after the famous Highclere Castle in the United Kingdom, home of the Earl of Carnarvon. The Highclere Castle has recently come into the cultural zeitgeist as the setting of the hit TV show Downton Abbey, however the Highclere Castle has a rich history that stretches back centuries.
Foundation Highclere Castle Cigars capture not only the regality, luxury, and class of the Highclere Castle itself, but also emulates the kinds of cigars that would have been smoked there during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is done with two top-shelf blends, the Edwardian and the Victorian, both of which are made at Tabacalera A.J. Fernandez in Nicaragua.
Foundation Highclere Castle Edwardian cigars are the mellower blend of the duo. These gems are made with a unique Nicaraguan hybrid called Nicadan along with vintage Nicaraguan Corojo and Criollo long fillers grown in Jalapa and Ometepe. Surrounding the core is a dusky Brazilian Mata Fina binder and a gorgeous silky-smooth Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. The result is an opulent and finely balanced medium-bodied smoke brimming with flavors of leather, charred wood, peppery spice, caramel, roasted nuts, and hints of cream.
Released a couple years later, the Foundation Highclere Castle Victorian cigaris a more robust offering that I reserve for the most special of occasions. Maintaining the Mata Fina binder found on the Edwardian, Highclere Castle Victorian instead wears a dusky Ecuadorian Habano maduro wrapper and filled with finely aged Nicaraguan tobaccos from Esteli, Ometepe, and Jalapa. With its bold medium-full bodied profile, complex flavors of chocolate, pepper, baking spices, leather, oak, earth, and tobacco sweetness dance on my palate with harmony.
The Highclere Castle, with all its rich history, is also home to one of the largest collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world, providing the inspiration for Foundation Highclere Castle Senetjer cigars. Named after the ancient Egyptian word for “incense” and celebrating the 100th anniversary of discovering the tomb of King Tutankhamun, these limited-edition gems come in boxes shaped like a pharaoh’s sarcophagus.
These eye-catching gems are made with a high-priming Ecuadorian Habano wrapper over a Brazilian Mata Fina binder and a top-secret blend of long fillers, though they have been extensively aged for over 3 years. Rich and complex, the Highclere Castle Senetjer provides a tapestry of sweet spices, chocolate, cedar, leather, espresso, and tobacco sweetness.
